Duke University School of Medicine

In 2016, Duke University School of Medicine implemented an accelerated pathway in orthopaedics (APO) to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of training in orthopaedic surgery.  A unique curriculum in the third year of medical school here provides the potential opportunity for up to two students to participate in an accelerated UME-GME orthopaedic residency program at Duke.  Students who successfully complete this third year are be eligible for direct admission into the Duke Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program PGY-1 level the following year.

  • Structured, clinically based year of orthopaedic surgery sub-internship curriculum that focuses on the basic clinical and decision-making skills essential for the care of musculoskeletal conditions.

  • One-month rotations in: Basic Surgical Skills, Orthopaedic and General Surgery Trauma, Sports Medicine, Community-based Clinical Orthopaedics, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Research, Musculoskeletal Radiology, and General Orthopaedic Surgery

  • Longitudinal core curriculum throughout the year provides intentional training and experience in leadership, professionalism, research, practice and systems-based medicine, and ethics.

  • Opportunities for research will be supported during the year.
