University of California Davis (UC Davis) School of Medicine Accelerated Pathway

The UC Davis School of Medicine Accelerated Competency-based Education in Primary Care (ACE-PC) Program is a six-year medical school/residency pathway for students committed to primary care careers. 

  • Collaboration between UC Davis School of Medicine and Kaiser Permanente Northern California

  • Integrated UME-GME linked to primary care residency program at UC Davis or Kaiser Permanente Northern California

  • Admission at time of matriculation – requires second interview after acceptance to traditional program

  • Start 6 weeks early for Foundations ‘bootcamp’

  • Summer immersion in partner residency program

  • 3-year Kaiser Permanente continuity clinic, starting week 2 of medical school

  • With the exception of the bi-weekly continuity clinic, the pre-clinical courses same as traditional

  • Most of the eliminated weeks are in MS4 year

  • UME-GME continuum allows tracking of competency over time

  • Mentors from UC Davis and Kaiser Permanente

  • Participation in NRMP

  • One year less tuition plus a UC Davis and The Permanente Medical Group scholarship

  • Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship

  • Critical care clerkship and sub-internship are required

  • Expanding to include Psychiatry, combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry and Family Medicine/Psychiatry in 2020

  • Outcomes as of 2019:

    • 29 students enrolled or graduated

    • 80% of students are disadvantaged

    • 60% of students are from a community under-represented in medicine

    • Two cohorts of graduates (10 students) thriving in GME

    • Changed the law in California to permit students who graduate from medical school in less than 4 years to be eligible for a California medical license

Planned expansion to other areas of workforce need (e.g., General Surgery, Pediatrics).
