New York University School of Medicine Three-Year Pathway to the MD degree
The NYU School of Medicine Three Year Pathway programs allows students to tailor their training through the development of individualized pathways. This program started in 2013 after redesign of the medical school curriculum to an 18 month pre-clerkship curriculum that allowed the development of 3, 4 or 5 year (dual-degree) training programs.
Integrated program with pathway to residency program at NYU
Participation in NRMP, ranked to match at NYU but not obligated to stay
Admission at time of matriculation or Spring of first or second year of medical school (opt-in)
Accepted into the four-year program and then offered application to the three-year program by completing additional essays, interviews with residency program directors for acceptance decisions
UME-GME continuum allows tracking of competency over time
Strong mentorship with three advisors (traditional, three-year pathway, departmental)
Opportunities for shadowing, research and attendance at departmental conferences
Financial savings of one year of tuition (approximately 250K with one year of tuition and one year of additional earnings)
For first 2.5 years curriculum mirrors the four-year pathway allowing easy transition to four-year program if necessary
130 weeks of curriculum, critical care clerkship and sub-internship are required, 18 weeks shorter than traditional four-year pathway
Greatest benefit is the ability to track student's competency and development over 7 (or more) years from UME through GME. Allows students who are certain about their career choice to individualize their training, enter practice earlier, partake in education and research in the field they are most attracted to and to have less financial debt.
